Description:
Lord Stephen Barrett is attacked and nearly killed one night while riding in the woods. Luckily, his battered body is discovered by Hayley Albright, who brings him home and tends to his wounds. When Stephen regains consciousness, he is dumfounded by his surroundings. Harley runs a cheery, free-spirited household, taking care of her younger brothers and sisters as if they were her own children. Stephen finds her modest home, where even the servants act like part of the family, a refreshing change from unscrupulous London society.

Until he can discover who is trying to kill him, Stephen decides to hide in Hayley's house, pretending to be a tutor of modest means. The children soon grow to love Stephen, and he is equally captivated by them. But he is stunned by his feelings for Hayley. When the time comes for him to depart, Stephen gives in to the desire that has been consuming him for weeks. After a night of passion he walks out of Hayley's life, truly believing that she is better off without him. Both are miserable, until fate (and Stephen's sister) intervene to bring Hayley to London and back into Stephen's arms.
