Leech entered the Royal Navy at age 12, and his memoirs span 30 years of service. He recounts many details of daily life at sea, including heavy drinking, floggings, tyrannical captains, and the actions of the press gang. Captured during the War of 1812, he spent some time in the American service. Although drinking aboard U.S. Naval vessels had been abolished even at that early date, Leech found that the prevalence of floggings and autocratic captains was little different from that ot the Royal Navy.
Although the original edition is now a rare collector's item, this detailed narrative of life at sea has been heavily drawn upon by naval writers of fact and fiction for the past century.
